On the Arctic station of Disko Island, Dr Porsild has been caring for a Greenland Gyrfalcon which can now be released back into the wild - it’s damaged wing healed after rest. Its pointed wings which are strong in flight with pronounced wing beats carry the Gyrfalcon thousands of miles when searching for prey. The birds spend vast amounts of time at sea hunting other seabirds such as gulls and guillemots and resting on floes and pack ice.
The hours of day light are now at their shortest and before long the two months of darkness will begin.
