The Greenland dog is essential for transport in Greenland, when pulling a sledge they are able to navigate along the ice sheet sensing where the ice is most stable and will quickly learn trusted routes. They are able to sleep out in the snow which is useful when one needs to pitch a tent in the wilderness. Their dense fur keeps in their body heat; snow settling on them does not melt, but forms an additional layer of insulation. Their long bushy tail curls over to protect the nose from frostbite.
