It is now critically endangered due to poaching - mainly for Chinese medicine and loss of habitat. The Ujung Kulon peninsula was an area devastated by the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, this created a safe haven for animals such as the Rhino when many of the human inhabitants never returned. It’s wonderful armored plates fitting together like a puzzle are a thick skin created by layers of collagen lattice which will protect the rhino from the blows from horns of conspecifics.
