All over the hills of Lewis you will find peat stacks designed for optimum drying and craft in construction.
Peats are cut annually to fuel the fires and heat the homes of the Hebrideans throughout the winter. Peat is formed from decayed vegetation usually consisting of bog plants such as mosses and shrubs. These wetlands are a unique habitat for many kinds of fauna and flora and although small scale peat cutting does limited damage, commercial peat cutting and drainage can destroy these delicate ecosystems and release large amounts of stored carbon into the atmosphere.
